What is Biomedical Engineering?
Biomedical engineering is a discipline that advances knowledge in engineering, biology and medicine, and improves human health through cross-disciplinary activities that integrate the engineering sciences with biomedical sciences and clinical practice. The mission of this branch of engineering at PPU is to educate men and women who can bridge engineering with life sciences in the service of human health and represent the biomedical profession with distinction.
Educational Objectives
The educational objectives of the biomedical engineering undergraduate program are that the graduates will:
1. Work in careers in biomedical engineering or related fields and will continue developing the necessary skills to obtain leadership positions and other positions of increasing responsibilities.
2. Work in research careers by applying their background and knowledge towards the advancement of technology and the betterment of society by contributing to educational and social institutions.
3. Continue to learn and to expand and develop their knowledge and skill sets so as to be able to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing global environment.
Student Outcomes
The Biomedical Engineering program at PPU has adopted the following student outcomes.
A. Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex biomedical engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics
B. Ability to apply biomedical engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration for public health, safety, and welfare as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
C. Ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
D. Ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create collaborative, and inclusive environment establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
E. Ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions.
F. Ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
A career in Biomedical Engineering
BME is a branch of engineering in which knowledge and skills are developed and applied to solve problems in biology and medicine. Students choose the biomedical engineering fields to be of service to people; for the excitement of working with living systems; and to apply advanced technology to complex problems of medical care. Biomedical engineers may be called upon to design and maintain instruments and devices, to bring together knowledge from many sources to developed new procedures, or to carry out research to acquire knowledge needed to solve new problems.
